Plumbing Mistakes to Avoid in the New Year
The pipes that bring water in and out of people’s homes are meant to be hidden. Unfortunately, because they are out of sight, they are often out of mind until something goes wrong. There are steps that homeowners can take that will improve the function of their plumbing system, and there are mistakes that can be made that may be detrimental to the system as a whole or may cause future problems. This blog will discuss these mistakes to avoid in the new year below.

Bad Idea #1: Using Liquid Drain Cleaners
Chemical drain cleaners may seem like the cheap and easy alternative to calling the plumber for a clog, but they may end up costing much more. The chemicals in liquid drain cleaners will eat away and remove a clog, but they can also cause damage to the pipes. This damage includes things like:
- Pitting: This makes the surface area of the pipe's interior uneven and rough. This can lead to further clogs.
- Corrosion: This causes a weakening of pipe materials. If the pipe is thinning, it will be more likely to leak or burst.
- Pipe Leaks: Leaky pipes can result from the corrosion mentioned above. This can, of course, lead to structural damage and water damage.
- Water Damage: The water dripping from the pipes has to go somewhere, and it can end up ruining drywall, floorboards, and more.
Professionals have safe ways to clean drains and remove clogs. Pipe snaking and hydro jetting are safe and effective methods of clog removal that do no collateral harm to the surrounding pipes if done by an experienced plumber.

Bad Idea #2: Neglecting Water Heater Maintenance
A water heater provides more than just hot water. It gives a wonderfully comfortable way to get clean and relax, not to mention the other cleaning duties it performs with the dishwasher and washing machine. Water heaters are the silent partners for a lot of the work around the house. They are essential, but they are often neglected and not given the proper maintenance. Taking care of a water heater is vital for its function, efficiency, and lifespan. Some of the tasks that must be performed for water heater maintenance include the following:
- Anode rod replacement if worn out
- Burner cleaning
- Electrical connection tightening
- Fuel line check (if applicable)
- Flushing the tank of hard water scale
- Heating element cleaning
- Pipe connection tightening
- Pressure release valve (PRV) replacement (if applicable)

Bad Idea #3: DIY Plumbing Repair
It may seem cheaper for homeowners to purchase parts and do their own labor for plumbing repair, but plumbing services are there for a reason. It takes knowledge and training to do proper plumbing repair and installation safely. Plumbers have to work for several years and take strenuous exams to be able to call themselves plumbers.
Most plumbing companies also carry a license and are insured to cover worker injury and possible property damage. If a homeowner makes a mistake, they are left to pay for the damage and fix the mess. However, hiring an insured plumber will prevent homeowners from being financially liable. Hiring a professional will typically save time and money in the long run by avoiding costly mistakes.
